The Kano State Commissioner of Environment Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim Getso has urged participants representing the beneficiary institutions whom benefited from the Procurement, Installation, Training and Commissioning of automated weather stations and hydromet equipments, to make effective use of the knowledge gain at the training sponsored by the Kano-NEWMAP.
The Commissioner gave the advice today in the Conference Hall of the Kano-NEWMAP office shortly before declaring the training opened.
The training was organized to acquaint the stakeholders from underline MDAs comprising Hadejia Jamaare River Basins Development Authority (HJRBDA), Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET), and Kano State University of Science and Technology Wudil with how best to utilize and maintain the equipments.
Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim Getso also expressed willingness of the Kano State Government under His Excellency the Executive Governor Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje to continue partnering with the Federal and all other stakeholders in a bid to address environmental challenges for the betterment of its people.
He therefore enjoined the concerned stakeholders for the training to ensure judicious utilisation of the equipments provided so as to impact positively in the lives of the communities along the corridor of the River Basins and the country at large.
Earlier speaking, the National Project Coordinator NPC of the NEWMAP Dr. Salisu Dahiru said that the activity came out as the response to the HJRBDA request to NEWMAP through its Kano-NEWMAP office, to provide them with the equipments.
DR. Salisu further stated that NEWMAP was designed to deal not only with the existing gullies but to prevent recurrence and monitor situation of Watersheds as a whole.
These objectives can not be achieved without the necessary data and information on the Water as the main culprit, when it comes to erosion, and Climate change that makes it faster or slower, He added.
The NPC also stated that the activity was pulled out of the NEWMAP Component II “Erosion and Watershed Management Institutions and information Services” which entails strengthening institutions that are out for environmental transformation, and HJRBDA watershed fall within the mandate that most benefit from it.
Adding that to be one of the reason for the prompt response of the NEWMAP to their request through deploying all the necessary machineries that make their request see the light of the day.

On his part, the National Water Resource Specialist Mr. Yakubu Anda talk on the essence of the equipments espicially to the institutions of learning, relating experience with audience, the difficulties students encounter to get access to such equipments.
He therefore called on the Kano State University of Science and Technology (KUST ) Wudil to use the opportunity and introduce their students to the facilities for research and documentation.
The beneficiary institutions through their representatives expressed profound gratitude to the NEWMAP for the timely intervention, assuring the Project of the effective utilisation of the equipments.
