The World Bank delegate comprising the Country Director and the Task Team Leader, and that of the Federal Project Management Unit (FPMU) under the leadership of the National Project Coordinator of Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management project (NEWMAP)visit Katsina to inspect the projects undertaken by the Katsina NEWMAP.

The event is scheduled to last from 23rd February, to 25th February, 2022 with series of activities to take place.

The visiting team together with Katsina State Governor, Alhaji Aminu Bello Masari went round to inspect the projects executed within and around the State.

The Governor was engulfed with joy and satisfaction with the stormwater drainage Management work executed at Jibia, Malimfashi and Katsian town Local Government areas, lamenting what he experienced during the 2018 flood disaster that claimed so many lives and property and rendered many homeless in Jibia.

Alhaji Bello Masari called on people especially the benefiting communities to guard against dumping refuse in drainages and other water ways as water and dampness does not augur well with mud structures

He urged the leadership of the benefiting communities to prefer ways of sustaining the investment by forming a committee that would become the custodian of the investments so that they will stand the taste of time.

The Governor recalled the time when several efforts were put in place to tackle the problem, huge amount of money was injected to address the problem but yet no desired result was achieved untill now, when the World Bank hold the hand of Katsina State Government with it’s expert opinion and material support the intervention has became a reality.

Alhaji Masari used the opportunity to pleaded with the World Bank to consider constructing an earth dam where the storm water contained would be channelled to for irrigation purposes, as it will create job opportunities for the teaming populace especially the youth and the women which will significantly improve the livelihood of the citizenry.

Earlier speaking the Country Director (CD)World Bank Mr. Shubham Chaudhury disclosed that they are in the State to see the projects executed under the NEWMAP in Katsina.

Mr. Shubham further stated that the World Bank is happy to have been able to support in the construction of the project through Katsina Government to ensure that lives and prosperity of the affected communities are safeguarded.

He lamented the challenges people had to experience during rainy season, despite the fact that it’s a blessing but it turned out to be roller coaster experience due to the negative aftermath that usually follows whenever it rained heavily.

The Country Director expressed happiness that the people whom property were affected by the construction project especially those that used to vacate their houses due to rain are fully compensated.

Members of the benefiting communities of Jibia, Malumfashi and Katsina town Local Government Areas commended the World Bank for supporting Katsina State Government to address the major challenges that posed the development in the area.

The occasion was graced by high profiles from the World Bank under the leadership of the Country Director Mr. Shubham Chaudhuri and the NEWMAP Task Team leader Dr. Joy Agene, delegation of the Federal Project Management Unit led by the National Project Coordinator Alhaji Salisu Dahiru comprising the Water Resource Specialist Mr. Yakubu Anda, the M&E specialist Mr. Mukhtar Tanko, Communication Specialist Dr. Thomas Adebayo among others, Kano-NEWMAP team under the able leadership of the State Project Coordinator Alhaji Musa Shuaibu, Katsina NEWMAP SPMU team, among others.
