The Supervision team which was led by the M&E Specialist Alhaji Mukhtar Tanko, was composed of the representative of the consultancy firm Mr. Henry Rowland, the Project Associate Miss. Obaitan, Mr. Filibus Gajere 1Assistant Project Engineer- FPMU, and Malam Musa – Assistant Communication Officer Gombe-NEWMAP.
Speaking at the Occasion, the State Commissioner of Environment Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim Getso who chaired the session that was held today at the Conference Hall of the Kano-NEWMAP office, reiterated the commitment of Kano State Government under the able leadership of His Excellency the Executive Governor Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje towards transforming the State’s entire physical environment.
The Commissioner further stated that the present administration has accorded priority to the Project in the State, due to realization that it has the potential to transform the State Environment through its strategic ways of fighting environmental challenges.
Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim Getso also commended the untiring support and attention given to the Project by the Government,adding that the strength of the Project can be seen through its Livelihood enhancement activities, sensitisation and awareness creation, and its afforestation efforts toward improving the States vegetation cover.
The Commissioner further stated that the Government is keen about environmental conservation, as such it is working towards reviewing environmental Laws that will address the issue of deforestation and encroachment in its communal forest and forest reserves, for the sustainability of the investment put in place by the NEWMAP Project .
Going further, Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim Getso brushed on some major activities carried out by the Project in the area of Livelihoods enhancement and Capacity building at the Project priority communities level, to mention few.
The State Project Coordinator (PC) Alhaji Musa Shuaibu, made presentation on status of implementation of the Project activities in Kano State.
The PC expressed satisfaction over the testimonies of the FPMU through its delegation for considering the Kano-NEWMAP efforts, especially in the area of Livelihood enhancement, afforestation activities.
On his part, the M&E Specialist Mr.Mukhtar Tanko said the team visited Kano to meet with the Project beneficiaries and authorizing environment and to document all the activities undertaken by the project in the State, urging participants to open up for meaningful discussions and experience sharing for the objective of the mission to be attained.
Commending the efforts of the Kano-NEWMAP espicially in the area of Livelihood enhancement, Mr. Mukhtar said eventhough Kano-NEWMAP falls within the tear II States of the Project, yet its successes in the area of Livelihoods enhancement is really commendable.
Earlier speaking, the representative of the DCK (media consultancy firm engaged by the FPMU) Mr. Henry Rowland said that Kano-NEWMAP happened to be one of the selected states considered to have performed very well in meeting the objectives of the Project.
Mr. Rowland also commended the Kano-NEWMAP promptness in making good utilisation of the NEWMAP web portal, saying from experience when his firm get the privilege to evaluate and document activities of all Project participating States for the FPMU, Kano-NEWMAP sites remains the richest.
Participants at the occasion included the State Commissioner of Environment Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim Getso, the FPMU team, Director Ecology and Forestry, Director Plann from the State Ministry of Environment, the SPMU staff, beneficiaries from the Project priority communities among others.
