The Kano State Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (Kano-NEWMAP) under the State Ministry of Environment has signed an MoU with the Hadejia Jamaare River Basins Development Authority, on behalf of the beneficiary institutions that benefited from the Procurement, Installation, Training and Commissioning of Automated Weather and Hydromet Stations intervention by the Project.
The signing took place today at the Conference Hall of the HJRBDA in the presence of all stakeholders comprising the State Commissioner of Environment Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim Getso, the National Project Coordinator (NPC) Dr. Salisu Dahiru, State Project Coordinator(SPC) Alhaji Musa Shuaibu some of the Management of the HJRBDA, representatives of the NIHSA, NIMET, Kano University of Science and Technology Wudil (KUST) the contractor among others.
In his remarks, the State Commissioner of Environment Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim Getso appreciated the NEWMAP national office through the National Project Coordinator Dr. Salisu Dahiru, for their untiring support and collaboration to Kano-NEWMAP whenever an opportunity comes that will improve the living standard of the people of Kano State.
The Commissioner therefore, expressed the willingness of the Kano State Government to continue partnering with federal government and other development partners in an effort to address environmental challenges in the State.
He then called on the HJRBDA and other beneficiary institutions to ensure good utilisation of the equipments provided for the intended purposes to be achieved.
In his address, the National Project Coordinator Dr. Salisu Dahiru said that the intervention came about following request by the HJRBDA to the Kano-NEWMA for re-enforcement in the area development of Hydro- Meteorological stations to facilitate their service delivery.
NEWMAP being the Project that deal with gully erosion, management of Watershed and land degradation in general, has in it’s second component a provision to strengthen efforts of some underlined MDAs that have a deliberate objective of fighting environmental challenges, and HJRBDA happened to be one of them, He added.
The NPC further stated that, the existence of the linkage between the rainfall, water, climate change, agriculture and establishment of gullies and other forms of land degradation and the objectives upon which NEWMAP was established, ie monitoring,supervision and assessment of the existing gullies, prevent recurrence and monitoring what is happening without the necessary data and information that being generated these weather telemetry and hydromet stations.
Speaking earlier, the Managing Director HJRBDA Alhaji Ma’amum Da’u Aliyu expressed gratitude to the Kano State Government under the State Ministry of Environment, the Kano-NEWMAP, NEWMAP National office, KUST Wudil, NIHSA, NIMET and all other stakeholders that contributed toward realization of the intervention.
He then assured Kano-NEWMAP of the judicious utilisation of the equipments and sharing of information generated for benefit of the Stateand and the country at large
When commending the KUST Wudil, the MD urged them to take advantage of the equipments for training and research.
In another development, the the State Commissioner of Environment Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim Getso led the team to the sites where the weather telemetry and hydromet stations were installed shortly after signing of the MOU, for Commissioning and handling over of the contract from the Contractor to the Kano-NEWMAP for unward handing over to the beneficiary Institutions through the HJRBDA.
