The Kano State Commissioner of Environment Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim Getso has called on people to stop indiscriminate disposal of waste in drainages.
The Commissioner made the call today at a One-day workshop organised by Kano-NEWMAP on Implementation of Waste Management and Provision of working materials to the Community Interest Groups (CIGs) across six priority Local Government Areas of the project in Kano State.
Dr. Kabiru Getso said that Kano State Government under His Excellency Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje OFR (Khadimul Islam) has accorded great importance to environmental sanitation and protection which compelled it to get into a concession with private company to better manage the waste generate for maximum benefit to be derived from the resources.
Lamenting the negative attitude of people towards the environment, the Commissioner enjoined people to become environmentally conscious through abstinence from activities that are identified to have detrimental effects on environment like dumping refuse in waterways and indiscriminate failing of trees.
He then called on the participants to be good ambassadors by innitiating changes from within oneself for the benefit of their communities, State and the Country at large.
Earlier speaking in his welcome address, the State Project Coordinator (PC) Kano-NEWMAP Alhaji Musa Shuaibu said that the workshop was deliberately organised to complement the efforts of Community Interest Groups across the six priority communities of the Project on modern innovations to waste management.
The PC further disclosed that the workshop also provided a package for all the participating CIGs containing a tricycle bikes, for collection of waste, wheel barrows, head pans, rainboot, hand gloves, protective mask, and fork shovel as a support to facilitate smooth operation.
Three papers were presented during the workshop by experts from different walks of life.
The Director Planning Kano State Ministry of Environment Dr. Garba Saleh Ahmad presented a paper titled “Toward a Circular Economy in Kano: Empowering Youth On Waste-to-Wealth”, from Bayero University Kano Dr. Murtala Badamasi presented a paper titled “Urban Flood Risk Reduction Through Effective Solid Waste Disposal” while the Director Operations Alhaji Shaaya’u Abdulqadir Ministry of Environment made a presentin on “Rethinking Hygiene Practices Towards Environmental Sustainability”.
The Chairman Central Working Committee Community Development Associations Alhaji Bashari Nasidi expressed commendation to the State Government for keying into such projects that positively impacts in the lives of the local communities.
Commending the Project for the gesture, Alhaji Bashari also assured the commitment of the participating CIGs of the judicious utilisation of the materials provided.
The occasion was graced by the Commissioner of Environment Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim Getso, Permanent Secretary Alhaji Adamu Abdu Faragai, State Project Coordinator Alhaji Musa Shuaibu, Director Forestry from the Ministry of Environment Alhaji Abdulhamid Bala, Director planning Dr. Garba Saleh Ahmad, Director Operations Alhaji Sha’ayau Abdulqadir, Dr. Murtala Badamasi from the department of Earth and Environmental Management BUK, Engr. Bashir Muhd Inuwa from the Environmental Society of Nigeria, community members, the State Project Management Unit staff among others.
