Automatic and Manual weather and Hydromet Stations and river telemetry equipments Training Session

The Kano State Commissioner of Environment Dr. Kabiru Ibrahim Getso urged stakeholders of the training in “Operation and Maintenance” of Automatic and Manual weather and Hydromet Stations and river telemetry equipments, to put to good use, what they learnt from the training session.

The Commissioner gave the advice today at the Conference Hall of the Kano-NEWMAP office, through the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry who is also the chairman State Technical Committee (STC) of the Kano State Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (Kano-NEWMAP), Dr. Garba Saleh Ahmad, shortly before he declared the training opened.

The Commissioner, while stressing the essence of workshop and trainin
ig to staff, also described it as a tool for personal development that facilitates the attainment of organisational goals and objectives.

He therefore, called on them to be attentive while the training lasts, to ensure that the investment to be installed gets the best of utilisation for the intended purpose it was designed to be achieved.

Earlier speaking, the National Project Coordinator(NPC) Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) Alhaji Salisu Dahiru said that, the activity which falls within the second component of the project (Institutions and Information Services), aimed at providing technical and operational support to MDAs managing erosion in Nigeria.

The NPC further stated that, provision of the equipments by the Project will add value to what the whole country is doing in respect to weather forecasting and flood information for meaningful planning and deserster risks reduction.

On his part, the State Project Coordinator Alhaji Musa Shuaibu said that, the training stems from the implementation of “Procurement, Installation, Training and Commissioning” activity, where the Kano-NEWMAP intended to install automated and manual weather and hydromet stations as well as river telemetry equipments across the Hadejia Jamaare river basins (Komadugu Yobe Basins), River Katagum in Zaki Local Government Area of 

Bauchi State, and one river telemetry equipment in River Wudil inside the Kano University of Science and Technology (KUT) to serve as a center for research, data generation and archival purposes.

On his part, the State Project Coordinator Alhaji Musa Shuaibu said that, Kano being the only state in NEWMAP that is within the Komadugu river basins, deemed it fit to carry out the activity, as a contribution toward realizing safe and conducive environment.
