On 14th Oct, 2019 , The Permanent Secretary Kano State Ministry of Environment, Chairman State Technical Committee (STC) of the Kano State Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (Kano-NEWMAP) Alhaji Tukur Makama Getso expressed satisfaction with the level of successes recorded by the Kano-NEWMAP within period under review, especially in the area of the fight against bedeviling challenges of desert encroachment and land degradation in general. The Chairman made the expression today during a visit to 400ha .plantings of 2017/2018 and 5oha 2019 degraded land rehabilitation established in various sites of the project, where efforts has been put in place by the Project to ensure that the State’s dry land challenges are finally laid into coma.
During the visit that was led by the Project Environmental Safeguard Officer Mukhtar Bello, Alhaji Tukur Makama Getso was in the company of member of the STC including Director Forestry department of the Ministry Alhaji Basiru Buwa, Coordinator Kano Afforestation Programme, Director Agric. Services State Ministry of Agriculture, Director Principal Officer from NOA, Dean faculty of Earth and Environment Bayero University Kano Prof. I.Yakubu, members of journalists among others. The chairman visited the 30ha of fuel wood plantation of Neem at Gumawa, 30ha of eucalyptus at Kumbo, Avenue plantation at Koguna Makoda LGA, 2ha community orchard in Mekiya community, 20ha conservation Mahogany respectively and 5ha botanical garden of indigenous species.
